Dr. Monica M. White is Assistant Professor of Sociology at Wayne State University.  She is also a member of the Board of Directors of Detroit Black Community Food Security Network.  Her research examines the work of DBCFSN within the context of social movement literature.  She investigates how citizens of the city of Detroit engage in community gardening as a means of renegotiating their relationship with the environment, eschewing reliance on external political structures to solve community problems and re-creating the city from the bottom up.
