When there are differentials in power and privilege within a specific project, a typical reaction is to avoid, ignore or suppress these differences. As a participant this workshop, Felix Wai, Rafter Sass, Will Lintilhac and Sarah Kadden will support you in acknowledging addressing and utilizing the multiple perspectives within your community of practice. Instead of understanding power and privilege as inherently damaging to our projects, we have the opportunity and obligation to constructively and respectfully engage people from all backgrounds who want to be a part of the good food revolution.
This workshop will explore this question from two perspectives: from the perspective of a person of privilege entering a project and from the perspective of a project integrating people from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. Through facilitated discussion and participatory exercises, we will explore respectful, healthy and positive strategies to capitalize on multiple perspectives and avoid the pitfalls of ‘us vs. them’ ideology.
